"A STYLISH COMEDY!"
KEVIN THOMAS, Los Angeles Times
"A sharp, funny valentine to the chaos of love in the 90's."
STEPHEN FARBER, Movieline
“An irrepressibly infectious romantic comedy.”
R. HUNTER GARCIA, Entertainment Today
"A zippy and incorrigibly good-natured romantic comedy."
WILLIAM ARNOLD, Seattle Post Intellegencer
“Pessimists beware: You might leave this one with a goofy smile on your face.”
BILLIE COHEN, Time Out New York
“One of the most joyous American films of the year...an absolute delight. Everyone is perfectly cast, but Mr. Lucas has the kind of wholesome charisma destined for real stardom. The same thing goes for writer-director Victor Mignatti, whose sensitive construction and crisp writing give a contemporary spin to an old-fashioned story that might have been dreamed up by Betty Comden and Adolph Green. One of the best American Independent films in years.”
REX REED, New York Observer
“The movie sneaks up on you and gently lures you into its web. Working at a slow, deliberate pace, Mignatti skillfully creates engaging characters. All the performances are first-rate, but Hobel is downright marvelous as the likable young blob of a woman whose life is in terminal disarray.”
DENNIS HUNT, San Diego Union Tribune
“Frothy romantic fun on a shoestring. Writer-director Victor Mignatti offers further evidence that you don't need a lavish budget or a big-name cast to turn out winning entertainment. Mignatti's sharp script is full of incisive observations about the often harsh realities of dating that anyone can relate to — and a trio of appealing performances.”

THIS TIME & BROADWAY DAMAGE
THIS TIME
What a film, what a feat and a treat!! It was such tremendous insight into the music artist experience - so intimate, colorful, and actually … inspirational.
-KENNY
This movie is magical! It truly makes you have a deep feeling of hope and joy and also to remember to never EVER give up your dreams, no matter how hard the tests or how long the wait. It’s fun, deep, kind, true and STRONG in its message and if that where not enough: the music is FANTASTIC!!! I LOVED IT!
-ERIC
At once uplifting and brutally honest, “This Time” is a heartfelt peek into the hearts of those who dare to dream…and that most important element of the human condition… hope, pure and simple.
-SCOTT
A moving and inspiring work. A rare and intimate invitation into the lives of musicians struggling with the creative process and the challenges of the business. I loved it.
-GARRY
It’s weeks after I saw THIS TIME, and it’s still with me. I really felt that I was right in there with those totally full-of-life characters, right with them on their journey. It touches on so many themes that anybody who’s wanted more than what they have right now can understand—what it takes to reach a dream, how to get out of your own way, keep hope alive, work with others, and deal with regret. And finally, THIS TIME is about how to live a life and find joy as you reach for that dream. It has a wonderfully combination of the inspirational, cautionary, and delightful–all at the same time.
-FRANCIS
Honest and Inspiring. Makes you want to fight for these artists and their success, in every way. The intertwined stories of the cast provided great insight into the hard work and dedication needed to make it in Music and Show business. Even with the star power of Elvis behind you, a little luck goes a long way! Very captivating and entertaining. I can’t wait for the soundtrack!
-GEORGE
Your movie is very powerful! I enjoyed the film just as much the second time as I did the first time. My friend Frantz was also very moved by the film. After the film ended, I turned to him and asked him what he thought, he couldn’t respond, and tears just welled up in his eyes. I especially loved Bobby, he seems like such a great person with so much to give. I would buy his cd on the spot after seeing this film.
- FRANK
It is a powerful film. The subjects in your movie are all such strong and interesting people, and you intimately captured a depth of the multi-faceted struggle they are going through as they pursue their art. I’m glad to have been at the screening and to have had the opportunity to see the film with such a good audience. It looked great. It’s hard to believe all of that was just one guy with a camera! I was very impressed by the film. The material, the story, and the emotional involvement with the characters are all very captivating. All of the characters are such inspiring people. The film does a great job of demonstrating what talented artists all of the characters are and getting you invested in them emotionally so that you really feel for them (and with them) as the challenges and obstacles and losses pile up. Then, by the end, each of them rises up and shines with determination and inspiration that you feel in your guts. I was (pleasantly) surprised to see how much it is a film about faith, in dreams as much as in God. It is an impressive and moving film.

As over-the-top as it sounds, “This Time” changed my life. To see the struggles, heartaches and highs of being an artist - hearing Peitor Angell say “you have to be a warrior with dreams”- encouraged me to take my painting seriously, and to become an advocate for myself as an artist. The portraits of the Sweet Inspirations and other singers - other artists - captures the sometimes painful process of creativity and the reality of today’s marketplace. “This Time” is a terrifically moving film, and not to be missed. Thank you for making a film that kicked me in the butt!!!!
-CYNTHIA
It was shocking to realize just how much The Sweet Inspirations have been in the background of most of my favorite music. The film tells their story with a fearless grace, revealing fiercely talented women who can’t get out of their own way long enough to achieve the success that is so obviously their birthright. I was surprised at how quickly I became drawn in by the emotional storytelling and how thoroughly I was invested in the lives of these amazing artists by the time the end credits rolled.
-LUKE
Every bit as gripping and cathartic as ‘Standing In The Shadows of Motown…’ this documentary deftly weaves the stories of Bobby Belfry, the Sweet Inspirations and Pat Hodges to poignantly illustrate that for every success in the music industry, there are equal parts tragic fall and inspirational comeback.
-JONAS
The film had a high energy level that kept me hooked to the screen. The characters were real and touched my emotions. Throughout the movie, I rooted for each character to achieve success and felt loss when they failed to achieve their goals.
-ANIS
LOVED. The two hours flew by and I really cared about those talented people in the end.
-TOM
A real treat for the ears. I have a whole new appreciation for those who struggle both financially and emotionally to entertain us.
-LISA
Truly awesome and moved me… the photography is very beautiful, and beautifully detailed as you gave a very “intimate portrait” of the delicate nature of these brilliant performers. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-GEOFF
Your film was so amazing.
-DAVE
The movie is great, the characters, music and messages!
-ROB
I really enjoyed the movie. It was so full of hope and funny too.
-JOHN
I just wanted to congratulate you on a splendid review of artists’ passion and the hard time it takes to feed the fire. Most of all, I wish you all the best to Peitor Angell, Bobby Belfry, the Sweet Inspirations, and Pat Hodges. The forum you afforded these professional artists moved and inspired me and left me with a deep and lasting impression of their enormous will. Sometimes it is hard to remember that one does not have to stop a tragedy to be a hero.
-PATRICK
Your film is wonderful. I felt so many things listening to Pat Hodges, the Sweet Inspirations, Peitor Angell and Bobby Belfry. I have a small store in Soho - I felt like I would like to carry the sweet inspirations - and the Pat Hodges cd….but alas the Pat Hodge - why is it not out? Would not even a small group of songs be enough? Thanks again - it was wonderful.
-MEG
The movie was phenomenal. I’d like to highlight the ways in which it was extremely interesting.
The cinematography gave this immediate sense that you were right there in the studio or in the club or at the church or in the car with Bobby or at his cabaret performances… it was very real……there was no sense that the cameramen were intruding or making a movie or artificial. All artists are metaphors for all human beings who strive to excel and in large part never reach the stratosphere of extreme recognition and achievement….and so even the most insignificant musing by Bobby or Portia or Pat or Myrna or anybody was actually full of significant and application to everyone’s personal lives where we all struggle to reach higher ground… the juxtaposition of two seemingly disparate situations of artists were formerly the top of their field and an artist who never really blew up was intriguing…the music was amazing and personalities of Pat and girls are magnetic…..
-MO
THIS TIME was a delightful treat. It was both sweet and inspirational! I felt like a voyeur in witnessing the behind the scenes of the hard work it takes to mount a musical endeavor, “comeback”, or even an “I’m still here, damn it!” I found myself rooting for each singer musician. It was especially moving to learn of the hit making Sweet Inspirations successes from back in the day and see where they are today, strokes and all. I know I will be making a special trip to Manhattan’s Upper East Side to go to Brandy’s piano bar to root for Bobby Belfry and sing along!
-GARY
THIS TIME is great! Fantastic sound track and such gripping story-lines that you can’t help but get emotionally invested in the characters’ struggles and triumphs.
-BRIAN
Oh! the music! It is so wonderful I wanted the film to go on and on and on.
-BARBARA
I loved the film. The Sweet Inspirations are Fantastic!
-ELIZABETH
It’s hard for most of us to think that stardom isn’t the goal of every performer. However, in the very loving hands of writer/director Victor Mignatti, “This Time” introduces us to a disparate group of performing artists whose careers comfortably nestle around the fringes of celebrity. Edited to perfection, we watch the “everyman” struggle unfold of being true to oneself while balancing all the expectations and doubts we harbor within. What results is a story that is as much heartwarming and uplifting as it is tribute to the indomitability of the human spirit.
-BILL
“This Time” takes the viewer on an eloquent, emotional and extremely entertaining journey inside the minds and lives of several musical artists dealing with the highs and lows, trials and tribulations and successes and failures of devoting their lives to the volatile world of the current music business in the 21st century. While documenting and contrasting artists such as formerly famous and successful backup singers for international superstar hit makers but who end up homeless, or a struggling pop singer-songwriter working in a cabaret bar to make ends meet, or a music producer striving to create a comeback hit, director Victor Mignatti expertly brings the viewer inside their various worlds while also giving us an exciting soundtrack full of infectious fun performances to see and hear. Anyone who is an aspiring musical artist or a music lover or fan should see this film.
-ELLIOT
You’ve put together a film that is not only visually beautiful, but incredibly inspiring. I was mesmerized the whole time. The music by all the artists is great and the message that they bring is clear. For me it was about realizing I have to do what I was put here to do and the discovery of that is as easy as following my passion. What a rich, fulfilling way to live life.
-BILLY
This Time helps convey something essentially American about struggling in the pursuit of one’s deepest held dreams. I think the film’s explorations of success and vocation and faith and heart will resonate with a wide audience. The struggle is especially intense for performers — and I think this movie captures a slice of the capriciousness and brutality of the music industry well. We see in the film how one can be ‘on top’ by some measures, like having a hit record, and still be nowhere by other measures, like financial security. There is no success in show biz that inures one to financial stress or career dips, or self-doubt. Frankly there is no success in any industry that does that, though we pretend there is. In the music business there is no pretending. What we see in the film is that its subjects are forced, time and again, to confront their own definitions of success, to re-consider their choices, to re-commit to their careers, to accept or reject standard markers of who and how they should be. It seems to strengthen them, even in the face of setbacks. (And it’s interesting that faith — in an outside source, in themselves, in each other, in the value of their art — comes up for all the subjects as an anchor amid that constant re-examination.) I think in this country we’re still ingesting the ’50s stories about how life is in America, and we cling fast to them. Stories like: ‘if you’re good at what you do, you will naturally ascend’; ‘once you hit your stride you are set for life’; ‘you have total control of your success or failure’. I had a very interesting conversation at a post-screening gathering with one of your friends, whose subconscious operating mantra seems to go something like: ’setbacks happen to other people because of their poor decisions, but they won’t happen to me, because I won’t make those mistakes’. I think this film challenges that notion, especially the story line about the producer credit. We see in the film that the best laid plans can be upended, and that many of our assumptions are false. Doing what you love, without structure and progress, is not gratifying in and of itself. Great singing is gratifying, but clearly doesn’t necessarily lead to money or fame. Fame by itself wasn’t success for anyone in the movie. Working hard doesn’t necessarily lead to financial reward or career advancement. Being savvy about the business and having a written contract doesn’t make other people honor it. In the end, it seems like the focus shifts from the external rewards everyone is still actively seeking to the internal rewards they have already created for themselves; staying connected to the essential truth of one’s dreams, keeping an open heart amid the daily toil, building the sort of character which allows one to survive and thrive no matter what the weather brings.

BROADWAY DAMAGE
“A Perfect Jewel of a Film” This film is a most delightful example of what filmmaking can do without a ton of money. Start to finish it is a pure delight. I rented it for a week and watched it 5 times so far! We need more films like this. BRAVO to all involved in making this magnificent film!
-DENISE, Chicago
“Broadway Has Damaged Me” I’ve seen it 5-6 times and love it even more every time I see it!
- LAKEGAN, Atlanta
What a great film! I thought it one of the funniest and really romantic films I've seen in a long time. Thank GOD I had the sense to buy the DVD sight unseen. I shall be playing it frequently. How about a sequel? Set in London?
- PETER, London
I loved BROADWAY DAMAGE. It's become one of my all-time favorite films. I ordered the DVD the very next day and I've probably watched it 6 times now. Very enjoyable and uplifting. A definite 10. I hope you make more like it soon!
- CARLA, Los Angeles
I recently rented BROADWAY DAMAGE, and so far I have watched it three times. You have done a terrific job with the movie!
- LUCIE, Boston
This movie is probably one of my "prized" purchases of 1999. It has charm, believability and much heart. I had to play it over several times. Bravo to Mr. Mignatti! In a world of "Block Busters" it’s a nice feeling to know that a director with so much tenacity and insight can create an "Independent Buster." Congrats!
- ROBERT, Miami
I rented the video and fell in love with it. I didn’t expect it to be as straight to the heart as it is. I liked it enough to get the DVD.
- ALLEN, Denver
I just wanted to let you know I thought BROADWAY DAMAGE was phenomenal! The audience here loved it, as did I. Between the bursts of laughter, the movie had a lot to say. - MICHAEL, Chicago
The movie is a tremendous success! BROADWAY DAMAGE clearly is a transforming experience -- back to innocence lost by a world moving too fast or driving too hard. You made a wonderful movie ! Appreciatively,
- JERRY, San Francisco, CA
Just a note from Vienna — your film was great!
- JAMES, Vienna
I saw Broadway Damage last week here in Munich, Germany. It was the best movie I saw at the festival (16 in one week)!
- MAX, Munich
The film is spellbinding.
- MICHAEL, Philadelphia
As a video store owner, it is very hard to give people a quality film that is exceptional… after they’ve seen the latest “over the top” blockbuster. For over a year and a half now, I’ve been DEMANDING people rent Broadway Damage. Everyone comes back thanking me for telling them about it. I haven’t had one person complain about it or just turn it in. In fact, I purchased my own personal copy of it (something a video store owner hardly ever does). Kudos to all the cast… especially the leads Mara, Michael and Aaron. I hope they are able to build long lasting careers from these fine performances. Cheers to Mignatti, too, a man who knew a good story… a great cast… and was able to turn Broadway Damage into something rare and special. Thanks!
- R.C., California
This is a great and original film! I can’t believe that more people don’t know about it! I’m telling ALL my friends! Thanks so much!
- EARL S.
What an oasis of quiet, gentle, human charm in a time of cynicism and fear. I watched the movie twice in one night it was that much of a tonic. I watch a lot of movies and have tired of the packaged and plasticky feel of Hollywood fare over the past few years. This movie was different. The acting was lovely and subtle, lending a dreamy, idyllic quality to the piece. It is refreshing to see gays portrayed with a human touch, showing their hearts for a change. It is reassuring to know that ideals and idylls are still alive in our somewhat damaged world. Nothing was ever created without dreaming about it first.
- ROBIN, Silicon Valley
Bought this video, unseen, in a shop in London. It was the last one in stock. A real find and a great tribute to a wonderful city.
- MICHAEL
Robert’s song should have won an Academy Award for best song. It’s sensational. There is no other so witty and soulful. Please release the soundtrack. I’ll buy a dozen.
- CHUCK P, CA
Wow… This one’s been on my list for a while… Missed it in the theater and finally decided to buy a copy on DVD today… Had a great time watching it (and I will again I’m sure…)…it’s kinda cool (with the internet) to be able to tell you what a fine job you did… and to thank you for making a fun fresh film… OK… and where the heck did you find Michael Shawn Lucas??? If he has a fan club or email address, please let me know!
Thanks again,
- ROB, Los Angeles
I just read the review for Broadway Damage. The review is totally inaccurate. This movie has been my favorite movie since day one. This is the first DVD I had ever bought and it is one I will keep forever.
- DAVE M, Clemson, SC
I love this movie it was a lot of fun. I wish there was more maybe one day there will be Broadway Damage Part II with the same actors. A big Fan.
- THOMAS C
Broadway Damage is one of the few films I’ve ever seen that presents gay men as romantic human beings rather than caricatures, and it’s also one of the only films in recent memory that has integrated singing into it’s narrative without intending it to be camp.
- JAMES, Brooklyn
Hi guys,
Just rented the DVD and watched it tonight. Really uplifting movie, funny and romantic. Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the Film. Keep up the great work.
Cheers
- DAVID H
I just now after all these years saw Broadway Damage. I feel so left out that I didn't see this sooner. It's one of the DVD's I bought and will buy an extra copy, because I will wear this one out, trust me. It's a move your can't ever watch too much. The only request, is how can someone get the lyrics to that moving song "Promise of Another Day"? I have emailed the artist just now and wondered if the lyrics are anywhere in print or available. Thanks for this movie. A Sequel would be very interesting and someone I believe everyone would enjoy.
- DAVID W, Houston
Hi guys,
Just saw your flick on the Metro Arts channel. I am reminded of a recent commentary I heard on NPR from Daniel Pinkwater talking about "Queer Eye for A Straight Guy." He went on and on trashing the show up and down, questioning everything from its premise to its taste, then wound up by saying, "...and it's absolutely irresistible." I feel similarly about Broadway Damage. Its flaws are its strengths. The predictability, the unbridled optimism, the film-student-feel of the production, these are the very elements that make it so endearing, so terribly charming, so truly delightful. I like to think of it as the After School Special for jaded New Yorkers who still remember what a joy it was not to know any better.
Thanks for the lift
- RUSSELL G
Okay, it has been some time since this came out and I first saw it – Broadway Damage. Watched it today while flying home from a business trip. Realized how much I missed my partner of 8 years. I don’t usually get that homesick, but this short trip was different. Sitting on the plane, watching the DVD brought back such a strong memory of how my partner and I became a couple. We were very good friends. Searching for something, never realizing, or afraid to see that what we wanted and needed lay within the very friendship we had. I guess I was Robert in this case. I made the “Grand Gesture.” And things have worked out. Eight years, never and argument, no tough times, just incredible respect, friendship and love – all wrapped around acceptance of each other, plus the understanding that the relationship is a gift.
Thanks for a wonderful and fun – and, hey, that is the key – FUN – film.
Regards,
- STEPHEN C
I’ve just seen your movie Broadway Damage. I think it was a great and fantastic movie which I will suggest strongly to my friends as a “must see”. It’s funny, romantic, sad and with a happy ending which I liked. Congratulations for your good work for you, the production team and all the cast. Please keep doing such refreshing movies… Truly yours,
- MARTIN B, Toronto, Canada
Loved this movie… I have seen in several times, own the DVD. The only thing that is missing is a SEQUEL… what happens next and theirs lives together is really a great movie ready to happen. Please make a sequel. - JEREMY and KURT, Long Beach
Hi! I loved the movie!!!! Excellent!
- J.V.
This was the best movie I’ve seen in a while! The actor that played Marc was great. Has he done anything else? Great movie!
- JOE
I bought the DVD, and I must say, I love it!
- ANDREZ, Pheonix, AZ
I recently rented Broadway Damage from Netflix and immediately bought it. What a terrific movie. What a terrific soundtrack! I love the songs, especially Promise of Another Day.
- ANDREW
Just rented the video of Broadway Damage and really enjoyed the film. Please have Mr. Mignatti do another!
- RUSS Y, Denver
Congratulations on a wonderful, fun picture! I liked it the first time and love to watch it over again. Now that I have it on DVD and VHS, I can watch it on the plane when I’m traveling.
- DAVID D, Dallas
Hi Guys!
Ben from Perth, Western Australia here… just saw the video… loved it! I was wondering if you had any idea whether or not the sheet music was available for Cindy Soltoff’s song “Men/Someone”. I sing in the local gay and lesbian chorus here in Perth and I think it would be an ideal song for us to do at one of our concert performances.
Thanks,
- BEN C, Perth, Australia
I was just wondering if the music to Broadway Damage is available both on CD or sheet music. I was particularly taken with the song “Someone.”
- LARRY E
Is there any chance of putting the soundtrack of Broadway Damage out on CD? I absolutely love the movie and the music is too good not to have out on CD! I’m begging you!
Thanks,
- ERIK W
I saw the movie Broadway Damage which was a gift to my roommate from his friend. I really enjoyed it very much! I have to say Mara Hobel did an excellent job. Of course, like everyone else, I too would love to know if Gabriel Zenone has an album out and where could I get his music? His Voice just touched my soul when I watched this movie! Incredible songs!
- BASIL, Houston, TX
I bought the DVD last week and just loved it. It was very funny and at times made me sad. Aaron Williams (Robert) makes the film for me. Kind of like my past. Different characters same situations. - TIM M (Marc)
Just a quick note say that I have just purchased a copy of Broadway Damage and thoroughly enjoyed it!! What a great cast (and gorgeous) and what a great feel good film. Please more… same cast… it’s perfect for a sequel. Cheers,
- MARTIN
Congratulations on such a great film! I’ve seen it numerous times and want to thank you for a job so well done. Hope there’s a sequel!
- RENE, Hollywood, CA
I watched your film today and I loved it. It was one of those feel good movies without being corny. It made me feel happy and at times somewhat sad. I think all gay people have been on some sort of treadmill at some part of their lives that these three people managed to get off. We’ve all met the fag hag, the twp guys who are “just friends”, etc. It was easy to relate to and is therefore truly a “gay” picture! Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next film whatever it is. - MICHAEL S, Melbourne, Australia
Any chance of getting the soundtrack from Broadway Damage? Or at least the single for Promise of Another Day?
- RICHARD J, Middlebury, VT
Hi,
Broadway Damage is a great movie. Thank you for the effort.
Thank you.
- TIM B
Just had to drop a quick line... I've owned the DVD of BROADWAY DAMAGE for several years. Whenever I'm low or after a crappie date it always takes me to a lighter and more promising place. I can't say that it's the best movie ever made but I have to say, it still makes me laugh out loud, tear up and believe in something a bit happier down the road. Isn't that what makes a good movie? Thanks for the "Promise of a New Day..." - ROGER, Sacramento, CA
Hello!
I recently had the pleasure of viewing "Broadway Damage". Thank you for a most enjoyable film.
I was wondering if their was a soundtrack available from the movie. I liked the music that was used, but have not been able to locate a soundtrack. Again, thank you for a great movie. Sincerely,
- STEPHEN H
I loved this movie. It was nice to see a gay movie that was not all sex and death. It was funny and romantic. The people were REAL.
- BILL H
It's a Saturday night, I have 2 movies to watch. First is Nicolas Cage in "Bringing Out The Dead". Hated it! Then, I pop in "Broadway Damage" with my fingers crossed. I found it very enjoyable, especially for those of us who can relate to some of the things that happened in the movie. I became sad, I laughed and I smiled. It was a good mix for my emotions. It made my evening.
- GEORGE
I saw Broadway Damage for the first time on video last year and loved it. I recently rented it again and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. Michael Shawn Lucas has a gorgeous smile that makes you want to write bad checks for days and Aaron Williams is a sweetheart. It’s refreshing to see a movie like this that just makes you feel good. I’m definitely going to look for it to own. - ERICK, West Hollywood, CA
This is a beautiful little fantasy that rarely comes true. A fun movie with lots of quirky characters. - BRYAN P
This is one of the best gay oriented movies I've seen in a long time. Every time I rent one, I hope they are going to be as good as this one was. The story is good, the cast is wonderful, and I really Love the ending. I Love the line "Do You Use Some Kind Of Spray?". Well, You will just have to see the movie.
- RS, Santa Rosa, CA
This is perhaps the best gay film I've seen in a long, long time. The characters were fun and believable, the men handsome, the female lead a riot, the plot, although somewhat predictable, was still intriguing. It was nice to see a gay film not about AIDS, but about love, romance, the chase. A truly feel good movie.
- SCOTT B
"Broadway Damage" is a wonderful movie, full of hope and optimism. It made me think back to what it was like getting my first apartment in Manhattan....decrepit, infested with bugs, and with bad plumbing. But I loved it, and I loved this movie.
- FRED from N.Y.C.
This is one film that goes beyond sexual orientation and allows you to see the character's as fully human. Very enjoyable and funny.
- GM from PA
I liked this well enough that I ordered my own copy. Good story and some pretty real dialog/situations. One of the other reviewers asked why there are no movies about us that aren't "sappy and poorly written/acted?" I think it's great to see movies like this, about us that are moving into the mainstream, with GLBT people as the main characters. Movies which have a decent budget, allowing them to have a good story, well written dialog, and technically up-to-date production.
- RH from CA
And I don’t use the “F” word lightly. I thought this movie was great. I really enjoyed the storyline. It was funny and I will be renting this one again. I recommend this movie.
- MATT in Knoxville
Humorous and fun to watch. And didn't the girl play Christina Crawford as a little girl in Mommie Dearest? I thought there was no chemistry between the hustler neighbor and the lead character, but that made the story even better because he was in love with being in love and then reality hit him. Good movie.
- RN from IA
I like this movie. Movies like this just go to show that you don't necessarily need complex plots to be entertaining. The movie is very simple, but the acting is wonderful, and the characters are all very realistic, 3 dimensional, and very likeable. The best way to describe this movie is "cute". A good, fun, little stay at home and watch a movie type film.
- JB from PA
A simple tale of "it was right there all along" love at long last discovered. It's NICE without being sickening, which is a hard thing to achieve. Everybody's been through at least most of this at one time or another, which doesn't make it any less fun to watch. Mara Hobel's character will grate on you, but when she does, she would in real life, right? So it's some convincing acting of a character I've met any number of times in real life (only sometimes she's been a man). Sure, we all know from experience that the happy ending doesn't usually happen, or if it does, it doesn't last long, but it's a nice fantasy. Take a vacation from heaviness, bring your willing suspension of disbelief, and just go with it. (As for the review that slagged this off as a rip-off of "Will & Grace" - I think this actually predates "W&G," a show whose characters make me puke, by the way.)
- CS from GA
I loved this movie. I'm such a sucker for romance. Mara Hobel is a hoot. This is a nice light movie perfect for a rainy afternoon. - MICHAEL
In a word - Yippy! This movie is not meant to change your life, opne your eyes to new ideas, or etc. It is meant to be exactly what it is - a fun gay romantic comedy. Love the sound track.
- DOCIMUS
A wonderful movie about gay men and their friends. Not to mention all the "stuff" we go through to have meaningful relationships. JUST LIKE STRAIGHT PEOPLE! The music is fantastic and fun, just like the good ol days. A great date movie. Be sure not to miss Sammy the mouse.
- JAMES Greenough
Loved it! I rented four GLB films with "Damage" having the lowest expectations, but it ended up being the best of the four. I was happily surprised to have both characters and circumstances in which I truly related. A few slow scenes, but overall a unique, funny, gay romantic movie!
- WES
I first saw B'WAY DAMAGE at the New York Gay and Lesbian Film Festival with quite an enthusiastic audience, and it stayed with me with a resonance I rarely experience. I've lived in Manhattan for 22 years, gayer than laughter, and I guess you could say I gave at the office: I was the founding editor of NEW YORK NATIVE, CHRISTOPHER STREET, THEATERWEEK, OPERA MONTHLY, and a few other such publications. I'm now a free-lance writer and editor, living very happily with my lover of ten years and our fantastic bassett hound,
- Elsa.
I bought the DVD of BROADWAY DAMAGE the moment I saw (online) its availability. In other words, I pre-ordered it. I just finished watching it for the second time, and was every bit as enchanted as I was the first time around. It has a rare likability and "period" accuracy — and an authenticity that actually brought tears to my eyes. It deserves a far wider audience than it has already earned, but hey, I didn't make the world. It would be ungentlemanly of me to badmouth other "gay" movies that kicked in big-time, but BD has it over most of them in terms of sheer heart. Great cast, especially Mara (MOMMIE DEAREST) Hobel and Aaron Williams, who gives great balance and eyelashes, and Michael Shawn Lucas, who has one of the great natural smiles in contemporary film. Oh, I could go on, and I probably will after I watch it yet again.
Special thanks to Victor Mignatti, whose incredible ear lended this improbable project a rare veracity and (sigh) depth of feeling. Thanks to you all. Your work and your faith in it shall not go unrewarded.
A thousand kisses,
- TOM
I loved the movie Broadway Damage and the music in it. Do you think there will be a sequel? - DAVE
Really enjoyed the video we rented. Find a new story line and do another one!!
Thanks…
- LEE, Atlanta
Sweet, Playful, Fun entertainment
If you love a good romantic fantasy, you’ll probably LOVE this. This film is about reliving those risk-taking moments when first falling in love, and it’s ultimately about friends, arguing in favor of love beginning with a strong friendship. There are few films of this genre (sad we even call this a genre) that have a light-hearted feeling. The scrip isn’t an Oscar contender, but that didn’t bother me. The character & performances have their sweetness and humor, and are easy on the eye. All my friends and I loved it (even the cynical ones).
- REDCAT, Florida
Wonderful movie lambchop!
Fun movie! Yea, the plot’s been used before, but it’s got it’s own twists and turns. Robert and Marc are fun to watch, and their straight female friend is a hoot. You wont be disappointed with this movie! - CRYBOY, New England Yesterday I rented your film, Broadway Damage and I must say that a movie has not touched me in this way for a long time. Everyone associated with this movie deserves to feel a great sense of accomplishment! Mara Hobel and especially Michael Shawn Lucas reminded me so perfectly of myself and my roommate Amy, Michael Shawn Lucas perfectly portrayed some of the hardest struggles that I have had to go through in my own life. And the ending gave me us all hope that love is attainable and just when you least expect it, you find it. Thank you for making a movie that the gay community can enjoy and strive to rather than another movie depicting the doom of AIDS. Thank you,
- TODD, Seattle
I watched Broadway Damage over the past weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I always enjoy movies where the gay characters are not Nellie comic relief, dealing with coming out of the closet, or living with AIDS. This movie was much funnier and more believable than “Trick”.
Do you know the address to which I could send Aaron Williams a fan letter? I would greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
- JAMES R
I recently purchased the DVD of "Broadway Damage." Being an ex-performer (musical theater) from NYC, the movie synopsis intrigued me. Well, I was very pleased indeed. This movie is probably one of my "prized" purchases of 1999. It has charm, believability and much heart. The song "Someone" was especially touching. As Robert (Aaron Williams) was singing it… I felt every emotion. In fact, I had to play it over several times. Bravo to Mr. Mignatti! My hope is that he can develop other films in the same genre. In a world of "Block Busters" it’s a nice feeling to know that a director with so much tenacity and insight can create an "Independent Buster." Congrats! Sincerely,
- ROBERT N., Miami
I rented the video from my friend’s at our neighborhood store and feel in love with it. I didn’t expect it to be as straight to the heart as it is. I liked it enough to get the DVD. Thanks,
- ALLEN, Denver, CO
This fluff has the right stuff
"Boy meets boy" is one of the timeless plot lines – since the ancient Greeks at least – and this well-acted romantic comedy adds a number of twists and turns to what could have been standard fare. The showbiz wannabes of the title who lust after, long for, love, lose and land one another are appealing, and the men are all good-looking – even the presumably plain Robert, who in the real world would have no trouble attracting a man, even if he did ear a stupid porkpie hat as here. Perhaps that’s why the director put the hat on him, to disguise how cute he is. The lead hunk, Mark, has a frequent bemused smile that suggest thoughtfulness. He is appalled to learn that casting agents think he "reads light," and it’s one of the movie’s accomplishments that Michael Shawn Lucas as Mark carries off the combination of masculine appearance, conversation almost devoid of camp, and an unaggressive sensitivity that makes you like him – he’s the hunk with a heart of gold, even though he’s also a gym bunny for whom climbing a tree is an erotic experience. His elusive "must have item," David, is dark and pretty as a movie mystery man should be. As the Long Island princess, Mara Hobel is good, but her character’s main shtick (trying to land a job interview with Tina Brown despite having zero qualifications) is dragged out too long. The resolution of one of the movie’s main romantic dilemmas in the last reel feels very artificial and is the only wrong step in this otherwise charming and witty tale.
- ANDREW San Francisco
Dreams do come true…
Wonderfully crafted yarn about three friends looking to take a bite from the Big Apple. Mara Hobel as the shop-aholic friend is fantastic. Michael Shawn Lucas is utterly dreamy as the guy bent on finding a perfect ten. Aaron Williams is very sweet as the not so perfect guy pining for his best friend’s love. Hugh Panaro is perfect as the opportunistic musician. All with Chelsea as a background. Adorable.
- A VIEW West Hollywood, CA
Funny, well acted, really entertaining
It was a fun movie to watch, the music that David plays while Marc listens is beautiful (I would like to know the artist and title), he acting was excellent and really entertaining.
- WILLIAM, Dallas, TX
A MUST SEE!!!!!!!
This movie is one of the most entertaining movies I’ve seen all year. Mara Hobel is wonderful. (remember her as Charlotte on "Roseanne") I am so glad is was finally released on video. Buddy, New York City
Grand gesture? Maybe… What happens when an average looking gay guy falls in love with a guy who’s only interested in perfect 10’s and their best friend is a Long Island princess who wants a job at Vanity Fair even if it kills her? (It doesn’t, don’t worry) Quirky, lovable and a tad a la "Friends," this romp through the lives of twenty-something New Yorkers is delightfully entertaining. Mara Hobel (remember her from "Mommie Dearest"?) is absolutely over the top in this film, providing most of the campy dialog. A gay date movie for sure, like totally.
- A VIEWER, West Hollywood, CA
A Fun and Sweet Little Movie
Two friends, a young gay man and his straight girl friend share an apartment and try to deal with life in the big city, Mara Hobel is funny as the fag hag friend and this movie is light and comical as it explores the character lives and loves. Seeing the film in a packed house of gay men in Manhattan made it clear that the filmmaker was pretty on target as the audience laughed with recognition through most of the film. A very funny movie!
- Lindenhurst, NY
LOVED IT
What a really great film you have here. I picked up the DVD version of Broadway Damage not really knowing what to expect. What a wonderful surprise! How did I let this one slip by for so long? Good luck with your video edition. Sincerely,
- DON
Hello… We are your fans!!
Broadway Damage is a good movie I ever see in my life, also I would like to ask if you know about movie TALES OF THE CITY. I would like to have more details for this movie, if you can help me find all the name of gay actor name WILLIAM CAMPBELL, I think he is a sexy guy and a good actor. Thanks so much
- BIG FANS
Saw your film and loved it. The music in the film was also great, especially "When You’re Young and in Love." I was wondering is there is a soundtrack I could buy and where I can get it.
- H.B. Miami Beach, FL
One of the Best Films of the Year
My partner and I enjoyed the movie, one of the best we’ve seen all year. In fact, we rented it a few days later so a friend could see it. We all agreed it’s really a great film. I would also like to know if Gabriel Zenone has an album out, the song "Promise of Another Day" was truly beautiful.
- BILL, Dallas, TX
Finally saw Broadway Damage this weekend. Worth the wait. I loved it! I’ve been a fan of Hugh Panaro’s for almost a decade… so tell me, where can I get the soundtrack??
- BETHANY, Nashville, TN
Fantastic! Thank you! Love you! Keep up the wonderful work.
- RICHARD
Hello. Saw Broadway Damage last year and loved the film. Saw it twice. Just discovered from surfing the web it is available on video. Do you plan on releasing it on DVD? If so when, or is it already out, where can I get it?
- DEREK
I saw Broadway Damage twice and love the film! I would like to know if Broadway Damage is coming out on video and if so when. I definitely want a copy of your film. Sincerely,
- GENE, Bucks County, PA
I want to congratulate you on the great success of BROADWAY DAMAGE. My boyfriend Mike and I both agree it's the best movie we've seen in a long time. We laughed, we cried, we got erections!! The cast was wonderful & the characters were rich and well thought out. The movie was well written, directed and pulled together. When's the video come out? I want it. You have a winner on your hands. Sincerely,
- HUGHIE, Philadelphia, PA
I just wanted to let you know I thought BROADWAY DAMAGE was phenomenal! The audience here loved it, as did I. Between the bursts of laughter, the movie had a lot to say. I would love to get a copy for myself — I really liked it that much!
- MICHAEL, Chicago, IL
In 1972, I heard Frank Capra speak to a class I was taking. He told us he made his films to make people feel good. Then it was a Depression, now it's the AIDS epidemic. Your film is indeed a needed shot in the arm. Bob and I saw BROADWAY DAMAGE last Thursday. It was as if we were seeing one of Capra's films: romance, laughter, beautiful, seamless editing and best of all a happy ending. Though we have been together 19 years, we still touched one another during the film and left elated. We hope you have great success with it and with future movies. This world sorely needs your art. So many good wishes,
- JOEL & BOB, Phila, PA
I am sorry that I could not hear your Q & A after the screening of BROADWAY DAMAGE. You have created a beautifully realized film. I have attended all of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian festivals. It is incredible how far we have come in those years. BROADWAY DAMAGE is the kind of film that deserves a wide distribution. Not just in the big cities on the coasts, but all through the country. It carries a very positive message to all gay people and straight. That we are not all struggling with coming out or dying of AIDS. Your film shows us fully functioning gay people in the middle of very real lives. I hope to see BROADWAY DAMAGE marqueed across the country.
- ROBERT, Los Angeles, CA
I enjoyed the film completely. It's smart and sincere, I thought romantic and charming -- it's wonderful! - KENN, New York, NY
Wow! What a wonderful movie! What a fun evening! Many many thanks,
- BARBARA & ED, NY, NY
Congratulations on your wonderful film!
- TOM, New York, NY
I enjoyed being taken back to those early struggling years in New York while viewing BROADWAY DAMAGE. The actors are very good, especially Mara Hobel. Fondly,
- PAT, Philadelphia, PA
First and foremost I should tell you how much I enjoyed BROADWAY DAMAGE. It appealed to my romantic sensibilities that sometimes romance is sitting in front of your face while you fritter your time away looking for what you think you want. The film showed a more penetrative angle than what most people want to accept... that love must be sought out and one must "find the perfect one." Blah blah blah. Your insight transferred to film really inspired me, if not completely impressed me.
I remain an impressed audience attendee... Sincerely,
- JIM, Oakland, CA
I want to congratulate you on your film BROADWAY DAMAGE. I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved its unabashed optimism. I wish you lots of luck... it certainly deserves a wide audience. Regards,
- KALZAAD, Columbus, OH
We met in the tent after BROADWAY DAMAGE and I just wanted to repeat my thanks in writing for what has been my hot ticket for the festival so far. After seeing you, my friends and I went for a meal together and found ourselves talking about your film and related issues all evening! What you wrote in your program notes about your experience of the advertising industry and especially your comments about the sad personal consequences of our fear-driven culture resonated deeply with me. Thank you.
With all good wishes,
-CHRISTOPHER, London, England
What a masterstroke of genius! BROADWAY DAMAGE is splendid -- witty, colorful, poignant and not heavy handed. It is truly a story anyone gay or straight can relate to in many ways. It is the perfect film for Middle America to finally become acquainted with REAL gay characters. You should be very proud of this terrific accomplishment.
- WALTER, Philadelphia, PA
In the rosy glow of the prefect film evening -- I felt that I had to put my appreciation into a more tangible form than the handshakes and "Thank Yous" we exchanged last evening. Before seeing your fabulous film, I was on the horns of a dilemma: which would get my vote as top film? Well BROADWAY DAMAGE knocked them all out of the competition for numero uno. I say without hesitation that "BD" would be one of my dozen "desert island" films, in the company of JEFFREY, LONG-TIME COMPANION and PARTING GLANCES. If "BD" doesn't get picked up for general release the film industry is in worse shape than I ever could imagine! Please give my thanks and best wishes to everyone involved in your wonderful project. I look forward to seeing all your names on the "big screen" again and often in the future. (All that and great male pulchritude too. There's not a man in the cast I'd throw out of bed for eating crackers!)
I have decided to see "BD" again as my final film at the Festival Sunday evening: How's that for loyalty?! And I'm taking a friend. It is what is usually termed "Ending things on a high (the HIGHEST) note." Very Sincerely,
- ROBERT, Seattle, WA
It was pure pleasure! The film was "Fabulous" and I don't use the "F" word lightly! I had a terrific time.
- PATRICE, Philadelphia, PA
Just came from seeing Broadway Damage at the Market Theater in Seattle. It was a great movie. I especially liked the song actor Aaron sang to his friend and wondered if it will ever be a soundtrack album? Later even maybe the movie will be on DVD or Laser Disk. It was great going to see a gay romantic comedy that I can identify with. Not many with a gay theme depicting the main male characters as ordinary straight appearing men. I will be sure to recommend it to my friends. Thanks for your creativity.
- DOBY
I saw your wonderful film this weekend and fell in love with it. I'm taking my partner to see it tomorrow (partly as an excuse for me to see it again... and I rarely have the desire to see a film twice in a theater.) I'll be looking for more from all concerned with this film. Thanks for an enjoyable time... - CB, Chicago
The film is soooooo great, that I can't wait for the video to get into the mood of it again! Is there a soundtrack available??? I hope so, otherwise I've got to travel from one festival to another to see "Broadway Damage" over and over again. Please send me a note of hope to touch the dark and cold winternights in Berlin with a stroke of sunlight. Sincerely,
- KAI, Berlin, Germany
I just wanted to say how much I loved your film. Unfortunately, I only saw it twice... it is truly a movie to be seen again and again. I am hoping that it will be released soon on either DVD or VHS. I would also love to own the soundtrack. Can you please let me know how I can get a copy. BD really made a great impact on me and many of my friends.
- JMORIN
Broadway Damage! Just saw it. Wonderful. Is it available in purchase or rental yet? Thanks.
My name is Mark, I am from South Africa. I went to the gay film festival for the first time. I watched a few movies and was thinking mmm this is not for me... too boring until i watched Broadway Damage. I want you all for this wonderful production and the cast was great. I am 27 and only admitted i am gay the beginning of this year. This movie made me happy and sad. Happy because i live in a fairy tale world and in this movie love is a beautiful thing and the two most gorgeous men get each other in the end. Sad... because i want something like that, but cannot find it. Love you all
- MARK
I just saw Broadway Damage at the festival here in Portland, OR. It was great! Please let me know when this will be available on video (preferably DVD) so I can add it to my collection. Thanks! - ALAN
I've seen the movie at Lesbian & Gay Filmfestival in Hamburg and I really loved it. Can you tell me if a soundtrack will be released? Thanks. Yours,
- HANS-JURGEN
This was one of the best films I've seen in a while! I enjoyed the actors and the plot was impeccable! Excellent JOB!
- PATRICK, New York
I loved Broadway Damage! I vote for a sequel!! I can't wait to see what is up with all of our "Broadway damagees!"
- JIM, San Diego, California
Hi! I was curious when the film "Broadway Damage" will be released on video and how can I get a copy of the soundtrack? :) Thanks,
- KEITH
We saw the movie last night and think Michael is "To-Die-For" and Hugh is a Doll and want Mara to be the mother of our children. As others have stated, we would love to have a copy for ourselves. When will the DVD be available?
- JIM, BOB & DANIEL, San Diego, California
I loved the movie. Can I get it on video? Please let me know when it comes out. Thanks,
- SCOTT
Hi all -- Happy Hollywood Harlan reporting. I KNOW you will all see BROADWAY DAMAGE when it opens in a few weeks. Unbelievably funny, poiniant and a slice of life I certainly could relate to.
Until next time, see you at the movies... Hi!!! First of all congratulations to this great movie!! Do you have any ideas where i can get the music to this movie? Especially the song promise of another day?
Thanks for your help! Ciao,
- FRANK
I saw Broadway Damage today at the Laemmle Sunset 5 (loyal plug) and enjoyed it very much. Do you have plans on bringing it to video soon? Thanks!

- BILL
I saw the movie last weekend and I think it was great! The story was very good and I loved the selection of songs you made.

Greetings from the culturally deprived southwest. One question... any chance this film EVER coming to Phoenix? or do I need to book a flight to S.F.? Regards,
